BACK PAIN AND CHIROPRACTIC
The Scientifically proven effectiveness of Chiropractic treatment for back pain is why Chiropractic is so popular and has become a household name. Back pain is the most common presenting complaint at chiropractic clinics. Probably 2/3rds of back pain treated by Chiropractors is for lower back pain. Approximately 80% of all individuals will experience lower back pain at some point during their lives.
Chiropractic spinal manipulation treatment for lower back pain patients has been extensively researched and has been shown to be clinically effective, safe and also cost-effective, this is why Chiropractic manipulation is recommended by the NHS evidence based provider (NICE) National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence. (NICE) develops evidence-based guidelines for the NHS on the most effective ways to diagnose, treat and prevent disease and ill health.
In May, 2009 NICE published its much anticipated guidelines relating to Early Management of Persistent Non-Specific Low Back Pain. Chiropractic management of these patients was recommended as a first choice option. Chiropractic treatment was deemed to be effective, safe and cost-effective. This Scientific research showing Chiropractic’c effectiveness means that Chiropractic treatment is accepted by all major insurance companies.
Acute, Sub-Acute and Chronic Back Pain

Back pain may radiate into the legs if the spinal nerves are inflammed.
Acute back pain is defined as Back pain lasting up to six weeks, sub-acute back pain lasts from six to twelve weeks. Back pain lasting for longer than three months is regarded as Chronic, These are the commonest injuries we see in our clinic. Plymouth Chiropractor Kevin Kelly works for the NHS and in his central Plymouth, Peverell Chiropractic Clinic treating acute and Chronic Back Pain. There are quite a few common types of back pain ranging from mechanical low back pain to disc prolapses/ Sciatica. Mr Kelly has 20+ years experience in treating both simple and more serious back injuries.
With a history of low back pain and regular acute episodes of back pain your spine gradually becomes unstable, with episodes of low back pain getting progressively worse in your 20’s to 40’s often leading to a chronic problem that never really goes away. Chiropractic treatment has been scientifically shown to reduce back pain and Spinal Manipulation has been used for thousands of years as a successful treatment. Chiropractic manipulative techniques are regarded as being one of the most sophisticated methods of spinal manipulation available today and Chiropractor’s popularity is increasing every day due to the effectiveness of their treatment. Remember similar back conditions like yours have probably been successfully treated hundreds if not thousands of times at our central Plymouth Chiropractic clinic in Peverell.
Back Pain and Slipped discs

Slipped discs (Herniated Discs) are treated in our clinic.
With a history of acute and sub-acute episodes of back pain the instability occuring may lead to a “slipped disc” these can also be caused by excessive loading on the spine, for example lifting a heavy weight and twisting A Slipped Disc (disc herniation) is a rupture of fibrocartilagenous material (annulus fibrosis) that surrounds the intervertebral disc. This rupture involves the release of the disc’s center portion containing a jelly like substance called the nucleus pulposus. Pressure from the vertebrae above and below may cause the nucleus pulposus to be forced outward, placing pressure on a spinal nerve and causing considerable pain and damage to the nerve. This condition most frequently occurs in the lumbar region and is also commonly called herniated nucleus pulposus, prolapsed disc, ruptured intervertebral disc, or slipped disc.
Plymouth Chiropractor Kevin Kelly treats slipped discs (disc herniations ) regularly…He says “with any type of disc lesion reducing the inflammation is the immediate goal….reduce the inflammation and you will reduce the pain. Correct advice is very important in disc herniation rehabilitation, as the inflammation reduces – spinal manipulation and spinal decompression can be used to restore the patients normal spinal biomechanics and reduce symptoms, for a more complete recovery it is very important to exercise generally as well as developing the bodies core muscles to help to stabilise the spine.
The treatment rationale Plymouth Chiropractor Mr Kelly uses for treating back pain has been developed over the last 20 years. His treatment is designed to relieve back pain, relax tense tissues and muscles and restore normal spinal function and motion in your joints. Various mobilising and manipulative (Chiropractic adjustive) techniques are used to return the range of motion of your stiff joints back to normal. Advice on exercise, care at home and future prevention is also given with treatment.
