Conditions Treated in our Liskeard and Plymouth Chiropractic clinics-  text version

Our Chiropractic clinic treats a variety of injuries ranging from Back pain to Sports injuries – see below:

Back pain

Kevin Kelly works for the NHS and in his Peverell Chiropractic Clinic treating back pain.  There are quite a few common types of back pain ranging from mechanical low back pain to disc prolapses/ Sciatica.  Mr Kelly has 20+ years experience as a chiropractor   Plymouth centrally based in Peverell treating both common and also more serious back injuries.  If you require a Chiropractor Plymouth and Liskeard based Kevin Kelly DC  treats this disorder.

With a history of low back pain your spine gradually becomes unstable, with episodes of low back pain getting progressively worse in your 20’s to 40’s.  Chiropractic treatment has been scientifically shown to reduce back pain and Spinal Manipulation has been used for thousands of years as a successful treatment.  Chiropractic manipulative techniques are regarded as being one of the most sophisticated  methods of spinal manipulation available today and Chiropractor’s popularity is increasing every day due to the effectiveness of their treatment.  Remember similar back conditions like yours have probably been successfully treated hundreds if not thousands of times at our clinic.

Leg and nerve pain

Spinal discs are made of a very strong fibrous material, containing a soft gel-like ‘cushion’, and are in-between each of your spinal bones (vertebrae). Discs cannot slip, because they are attached to the vertebrae, but the term ‘slipped disc’ can mean disc damage such as a bulge, a tear or rupture. The resulting pressure or irritation on the nerves that exit your spine can cause pain in your back, or ‘referred’ pain over an area, through which the nerves pass. Leg pain can be caused by nerve irritation or pressure in the lower spine.  We can diagnose exactly what is causing your leg pain and treat the condition accordingly.

Back pain may cause leg pain,  Every year in the UK thousands of patients with with leg pain are successfully treated by Chiropractors.  If you require a Chiropractor Plymouth and Liskeard based Kevin Kelly DC has tremendous experience treated Leg pain cases thousands of times in private practice and also for the NHS.  Experience has shown us that the most effective way of treating leg pain is by using a specific program which includes a combination of different treatment regimes (see sidebar) we believe our program is second to none and we are very proud of the results we get.  In severe cases of leg pain surgical intervention maybe necessary.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Tags: Sciatica, slipped disc, Chiropractor Plymouth.

Neck pain and stiffness

A cricked neck is painful but easily treated.  Neck pain can be very debilitating, often resulting in time off work, It can cause a lot of discomfort, preventing you from leading a normal life. Neck pain shouldn’t be ignored and left undiagnosed and untreated.  Headaches, shoulder and arm pain often develop as a consequence of neck pain.

At Peverell Chiropractic Clinic we provide Chiropractic treatment that gently restores the normal motion in the joints of the cervical spine (neck). The muscles, ligaments and tendons of the neck are also treated, this enables the injury to heal and helps to reduce the neck pain and discomfort that you experience.

Whiplash injuries to the neck from motor accidents can cause severe damage to the neck.   Chiropractor  Plymouth based Kevin Kelly DC has a lot of experience treating whiplash injuries causing neck pain.

Repetitive Stress Injuries

RSI Repetitive strain injury (RSI), also known as Cumulative Trauma Disorder (CTD),  or work related upper limb disorder (WRULD) is the collective name for ph ysical disorders that arise from continual use of equipment (such as computer keyboard and mouse) involving quick movements of fingers, hands, and wrists that can damage their (as well as those of neck and shoulder) muscles, tendons, and nerves, these injuries can be very debilitating.

In the late 1990′s Kevin Kelly working in conjunction with The Anglo European College of Chiropractic was involved in a pilot study to show the effectiveness of Chiropractic treatment for RSI.

Kevin Kelly is NEBOSH trained and has worked in companies as a Health & Safety consultant addressing their RSI/Work Related Upper Limb Disorders  injuries.  If your workplace requires a Nebosh trained Chiropractor   Plymouth based Kevin Kelly DC has the experience and credentials to reduce your Work related injuries and enhance your companies profitability.

Shoulder injuries

The shoulder is made up of several joints that must function together smoothly to provide the extreme mobility which is possible, and is necessary for many activities involving movement of the arms.

The shoulder joint complex includes the sternoclavicular joint, the acromioclavicular joint, the glenohumeral (ball and socket joint), and the scapulothoracic articulation (a pseudo-joint). The ball and socket joint has a very shallow socket, it is this factor which makes the shoulder so flexible but also so prone to injury.

Strains to the muscles and the ligaments can cause pain and greatly reduced motion in the shoulder joint ….far more than in any other joint.  The upper back muscles, vertebra and ribs also play a role in shoulder injuries. Being able to mobilise and manipulate the different joint complexes of the shoulder and upper, back and neck as well as using massage and soft tissue therapy enables Chiropractors to very effectively treat shoulder injuries.  If you require treatment from a Chiropractor   Plymouth based Kevin Kelly DC has alot of  experience treating thes problems click here to see some of his shoulder mobilisation techniques.

Hip Pain

There are many reasons for having pain around the hip.  Sporting sprains and strains often affect the hip joint and are readily treated; one of the most common reasons is referred pain from the back.  Osteoarthritis of the hip joint is the commonest hip problem, affecting mainly older people with 25% of women and 15% of men experiencing symptoms over the age of 60 years.

There is little evidence that structural changes of osteoarthritis can be changed or reversed, but we know that chiropractic treatment will help you avoid unnecessary pain and disability.

Restoring or improving joint function can make a big difference to the pain and stiffness. If you require treatment from a Chiropractor   Plymouth based Kevin Kelly DC uses joint adjustments, mobilisation and exercises to alleviate the symptoms of the arthritis, strengthening weak muscles and improving flexibility, hence, delaying  surgery and possibly even avoiding the need for it.

Sports Injuries

As the first person in the UK to graduate with both a Sports Science degree and a Doctor of Chiropractic, Kevin Kelly has a unique insight into the treatment of sports and other joint injuries.

Mr Kelly’s philosophy is to treat patients as he would like to be treated himself, and it is this attitude that has allowed him to become the popular practitioner he is today, as well as the vast experience he has gained from treating the general public, as well as International, Olympic and Professional athletes.

In December 2010  Kevin Kelly opened Plymouth Sports Injury Centre, operating from Peverell Chiropractic Clinic, the Centre has continued treating professional, International and club athletes, later this year he will be adding another member of staff to help with the sports injuries treated at the clinic. Migraine and Headaches

In 2009 The General Chiropractic Council commissioned the Brontfort report, which reviewed the scientific evidence for various types of Chiropractic Care.

The results from randomised clinical trials showed that 4 types of Chronic headache (including Migraine headache) were shown to be helped by Chiropractic treatment, 3 of which were shown to provide moderate positive evidence and one that showed inconclusive, but favourable evidence.

These are excellent results. The clinic treats headaches regularly, and probably over 70% of these tend to be neck problems with accompanying headaches,  The results for Chiropractic treatment of headaches are favourable, every week thousands of people with headaches are successfully treated by Chiropractors throughout the world.  Chiropractor   Plymouth based Kevin Kelly DC regularly treats headaches and also treats migraine.              Tags.Headaches, chiropractor plymouth, migraine.

Knee Pain

Knee pain and related symptoms can derive from damage to one or more of the soft tissue structures that stabilize and cushion the knee joint (including the ligaments, muscles, tendons, and menisci), It can also be caused from trauma to the bones forming the joint from infection to the knee joint or surrounding structures.  They commonly occur with exercise in sports that involve a lot of twisting /sudden movements.  We regularly treat knee injuries in our clinic, the commonest tend to be Medial meniscal/Collateral ligament injuries and Patella Tendinitis problems.  Osteoarthritis of the knee can often be helped with a combination of treatments and advice.

Knee injuries are characterised by pain, swelling and stiffness of the injured area.  Chiropractor   Plymouth based Kevin Kelly believes that for these injuries to be managed correctly, they may require the use of  ice, taping, manipulation, massage, mobilisation etc.

Occasionally patients with knee infections present in Chiropractic clinics , we refer these immediately to their GP or to A & E. Tag Knee pain, chiropractor plymouth

Muscle pain

A Muscle strain or muscle pull or even a muscle tear damages the muscle or its attaching tendons. You can put undue pressure on muscles during the course of normal daily activities, with sudden, quick heavy lifting, during sports, or while performing work tasks.
Muscle damage can be in the form of injuring (part or all) of the muscle fibres and the tendons attached to the muscle. This injury of the muscle can also damage small blood vessels, causing local bleeding (bruising) swelling and pain (caused by irritation of the nerve endings in the area)
Apart from treating specific muscular injuries such as injured Shoulders, Hamstrings, and calf’s most of the Neck and back injuries we treat have tender and painful muscles.  We believe that massage and soft tissue therapy should be an integral part of any treatment session.  Chiropractor   Plymouth based Kevin Kelly DC believes that the treatment of muscle tissue is a very important adjunct to Chiropractic manipulative therapy.  Just manipulating the spine and doing nothing else is will be very helpful but not as therapeutic as also using soft tissue therapy to loosen the muscles and make the manipulation more effective.

The results from randomised clinical trials showed that 4 types of Chronic headache (including Migraine headache) were shown to be helped by Chiropractic treatment, 3 of which were shown to provide moderate positive evidence and one that showed inconclusive, but favourable evidence. Foot pain

Foot injuries are one of the commonest sporting injuries we treat at our clinic; sprained ankles are the commonest sports injury.  If treated correctly ankle sprains (normally inversion injuries) recover quickly.  Mr Kelly – chiropractor Plymouth believes that the first 48 hours after the injury are very important and the correct treatment then will have a large impact on the speed of recovery and the time required before participating in sports again.
Plantar fascitis is commonly treated, responding to cryotherapy, deep tissue therapy and fascial release.  Osteoarthritis of the ankle responds well to mobilisation and manipulation.
Ankle pain can occur due to many factors. Because it’s a highly complex joint – there are 7 ankle bones, if these lose their normal biomechanical function (ie.become jammed up or hyper-mobile) ankle pain and or stiffness can result.
Remember if your injury is not a chiropractic case we can refer you to a specialist who deals specifically with your type of problem.

WE have successfully treated hundreds, perhaps thousands of back pain cases in our Plymouth back pain clinic, also necks, knees, wrists, Headaches, shoulders and other joint disorders.

And, if your condition is not listed below, give us a call and we’ll happily provide you with a free consultation to diagnose exactly what your condition is and help you work out what is best for your condition, referring you to the right person if your problem will not benefit from our help.
